About

I’ve been writing about baseball for about a decade now and loving every minute of it. After losing my most recent software sales job, I’ve decided to take a run at making this a full-time gig.

I am a Detroit Tigers fan through & through. I was there in 2003 when they lost 119 games which made the 2006 World Series run that much more rewarding. I probably take the games far too seriously, but I am OK with that. Curtis Granderson was far & away my #1 favorite player when he was a Tiger. In fact, that beagle you see plastered all over this site is named “Curtis”. In fact, check him out below. With Granderson now on the Yankees, Justin Verlander and Austin Jackson have taken the mantle as my favorite Tigers. I used to have a list of some favorite non-Tigers on this page that ran about 10 deep. Nowadays (this is being updated in 2013), that list would run 100 deep. This is what happens when you watch 100s of games each year.

I live in Austin, TX and currently make my living writing about baseball.

If you feel like you need to know anything else about me, just ask…

  3. The year they built Comerica park, which btw has a bottle of Bud Light buried deep beneath home plate. A friend of mine and I were trying to break into Tiger Stadium to get some pictures. We were caught by security who brought us inside. We were worried that he was going to trespass us and call the police. To our surprise he let us take two rolls of film of which neither turned out. The beer story was told to me by a high school teacher who’s brother was the forman for the new park.

  5. Dear Paul

I want to start by letting you know I read Baseball By Paul, and I enjoy your blog.  It is very informative and I thank you for that.  I started a blog recently re: Detroit sports in general, and the info. from your site has at times sparked ideas for my blog.  It’s a simple blog that basically asks questions about local sports and encourages fans to leave their opinions.  It’s called the Detroit Sports Question, and if interested you can visit at http://www.theDSQ.com.  I would like to propose a link exchange deal: I will link Baseball By Paul from my site if you’re willing to add my blog’s link to your Other Favorites section.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns just let me know.  Again, thanks for creating such an informative sports blog.

I want to thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,
    Evan@DSQ

  9. Hi Paul,

  10. Hello,

I just wanted to know If it’s OK with you If I mention your site from my websites? Please let me know. Thank you for your time.

    Regards,

  11. Shouldn’t Dan Haren be at the top of that list, instead of 3rd? Actually, shouldn’t Dan Haren get his own paulsporer.com page, like paulsporer.com/danharenisamazing ?

    • LOL!!! Kelvim Escobar’s inclusion should tell you how old this entry is, though I still like those players whether they play or not (looking at you Rich Harden). Re: Haren, obviously he should not only be #1 on the list, but the site name should be http://www.danharen.com/paulsporer or /baseballbypaul This much is OBVIOUS!!! 🙂 Viva El Haren.

I can’t wait to get you a Haren jersey when he dominates this year and let you proudly join my bandwagon.

  12. a couple young prospects moises sierra and montaous walton are definitely doing well out on the field i have been keeping up on these two talented guys since Training camp!

  13. Just curious if the SP Guide will be back for 2012?

  14. Paul- I loved you on Betting Dork back to back episodes. Trade question for ya.

I’m in a H2H league w/ the following unique scoring system for pitchers.

    W 9 pts
    L -6 pts
    QS 9 pts
    SV 13 pts
    HD 9 pts
    IP 3 pts
    ER -3 pts
    H -1 pt
    BB -1 pt
    K 1 pt

Would you deal Morrow and Thornton for Bard and B. Wilson?

My playoffs are in Aug thru Labor Day weekend and I’m afraid Thornton will be a setup guy somewhere and not closing. Guys who get holds and have great peripherals like, say, Jonny Venters are worth having in my league but not sure setup Thornton is.

  15. Hey Paul,
Will you be doing “Trolling the Wire” again this season? I was really looking forward to that!!

  16. Do u have a twitter account? Would be great to be notified Of your updates. Great stuff thank you

  17. If you’re an Angels fan in 2012 check out The Halo Effect with comedian Marty Keegan. He interviews Angels players, authors, reporters and ex-players. They talk what’s happening for the week, trades, and they do it in an entertaining way. Baseballhaloeffect.com

  18. Dude, looks like we’ll have an opening in that sim league where it will be 1999, it looks like the Chicago outlaws will be available, I’m the hong kong cavaliers, and as you can see from my roster, I’ve got a good shot for next year

    Check out

  19. Paul, love your stuff but please tone down the language on the podcasts. I am trying to encourage my son (10 years old) and his many friends to get into baseball but the fact that i can’t let them listen to your great podcasts because of a bunch of unnecessary f’bombs is sad. Please clean up the gratuitous language so that we can get the next generation interested in your otherwise great baseball commentary.

  20. Ahaa, its nice dialogue about this post here
at this web site, I have read all that, so at
this time me also commenting here.

  21. I am in a 10 team weekly Head to Head Categories League 7 by 6 league with 25 man rosters with 6 waiver adds a week…13 offensive and 12 pitching slots (9 of which are active) ..extra categories are OBP and SLug and for pitching (QS), you get a win for every category you win that week..so it can be 13-0 or 7-6 instead of just 1-0…

With that being said, i am curious to know what strategy you would suggest in terms of how many closers i should carry? It seems my league is split..2 of the teams have 0 closers while 2 of the teams have 5 each. and the other 6 owners falling somewhere in between with 2 or 3 Relievers…….because QS is the 6th pitching category it seems to me Starting pitchers have more value because they help with Wins, Ks, and Qs..while also being able to help Era and whip…

is it worth taking a loss every week (except when i play the other 2 owners without saves in which ill get a tie) in the saves category in order to ensure my team have the best chance of gaining extra wins in the other stats? i am really torn and stick in closer limbo as to keep the 3 i have now, sell the 3 off via trade, or try to aquire extra closers

    any advice would be great,

  22. Hi, i feel that i saw you visited my blog thus i came to return the choose?.I am trying to to find issues to improve my site!I guess its adequate to
    use some of your ideas!!

  23. When you want to teach them how it is done, you have to explain to them carefully the
concept or idea behind what you are teaching them. Once you’ve completed
this particular ritual, bury the candle and blackberries in soil.

  24. Excellent blog right here! Additionally your web site a lot up fast!

What host are you the usage of? Can I am getting your affiliate link in your host?
I desire my website loaded up as quickly
    as yours lol

  25. I am an avid listener of the podcast but don’t do social media. Came here in hopes of submitting a “grade the trade”. 16 team mixed standard draft, 7 keepers yearly, 14 categories in weekly head-to-heads (qs, 2b, obp & the standards). Send Devon Travis, Kevin Pillar, Anthony Desclafani, receive Martin Prado, Andrew Cashner, & Shane Greene. Hope this makes it to you. Thanks!

  26. Did you just block me?

Can you explain the situation? I’ve never been met with such a disgraceful, childish, irrational response in my Twitter history.

Is there a reason why you’re so defensive of Jason Hammel?

My mind is completely boggled here. I live in Austin, TX. Have followed you and read your work for years. This is beyond ridiculous. Please reconsider.

    Thanks.

  27. Paul, apparently I made an automatic payment (via PayPal) today to Baseball by Paul. What, if anything, am I going to get in return?

  28. Hi Paul–I also made an automatic payment via PayPal. Mine was on 9/2/2015. Will you issue a refund? Thanks!

  29. I have noticed you don’t monetize your website, don’t waste your
traffic, you can earn extra cash every month because you’ve got high quality content.
