Bullpen Breakdown.

After a giant collapse last night in Chicago that included a Michael Barrett grand-slam, the St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen is at it again. With two-out and nobody on, Braden Looper and Jason Isringhausen allowed a double and two-RBI singles, drawing the Brewers to within two runs, 6-4. Now, Gabe Gross bats with Prince Fielder on second and Corey Koskie on first.

Update: Gross hit a slow grounder down the first base line that was fielded by Pujols, who applied the tag and ended the game.   So they hold on, but it was far from pretty.  If the bullpen continues to struggle, rest assured that general manager Walt Jocketty will make the necessary moves.

Streaks Snapped.

Sunday was for streak snapping:

-So my beloved Tigers weren't able to put together an undefeated week as Kenny Rogers gave up five in 5 1/3 innings of work against his former team giving Detroit their first loss, 5-3 in Texas. They are the talk of the town for now and hopefully they are able to continue their success. To suggest they will outlast their division, a tall order for any of its members let alone the youthful Tigers, is a bit overboard based on one week's worth of play. Their long-term success will be critically tied to their ability to stay healthy. Namely, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, and Ivan Rodriguez. Hopefully they are conservative in their usage of young studs like Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya as well seeing the big picture instead and not burning out either arm. This isn't to say that the Tigers can't make things happen in big way this season, just that it is highly unlikely barring a move or two and piles of luck.  The team plays their home opener on Monday afternoon against the World Champion Chicago White Sox.

-The Seattle Mariners snapped a 27 2/3 innings scoreless streak in the eighth inning against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, but their comeback fell short and they took the loss, 6-4. Had they topped the 29 inning mark, they would have set a new team record for futility. During the rally, Ichiro pushed Nick Swisher:

Travis Hafner extended his streak of reaching on consecutive plate appearances to 11 when he drew a walk off of Johan Santana in the first inning, but a sharp lineout to Torii Hunter in the fourth inning ended the run.

Zito Dealing.

Barry Zito has limited the Seattle Mariners to just one hit through six innings of work as his A’s bat in the top of the seventh. This on the heels of Joe Blanton’s masterful performance last night when he combined with Justin Duchscherer for the 2-hit shutout in a 5-0 win. Zito is bouncing back from a horrendous Opening Day start against New York in which he lasted just one and one-thirds innings giving up four hits to go with four walks allowing seven runs.

Update: The bullpen carried on the shutout giving the A’s back-to-back goose eggs on the M’s. Huston Street logged his first save of the season.

Triple-threat!

Chris Shelton might just get himself a category all to his own with so many posts being dedicated to him. Much has been made of his five home runs to open the season, but he has decided to mix it up tonight lacing two triples in the first three innings to raise his batting average to .722. Justin Verlander and the Tigers lead 5-0.

Detroit Displays Dominance.

The Tigers dismantled more pitching last night for their 4th straight victory leaving them as the only undefeated team in the American League. Chris Shelton's home run, his fifth, was the team's 16th in four games, a Major League record. As far as records go, that ranks pretty high on the useless meter. Everyone knows about Shelton's hot start, but as impressive is the way Ivan Rodriguez has jumped out of the gate.

Last year Rodriguez had arguably his worst season since becoming a regular in 1992. His .290 on-base percentage was his worst since his 1991 debut, when he was 19. The .276 batting average was his first time under .297 since 1993 (.273). The lack of production combined with a much-slimmed physique brought on rampant talk of steroid abuse in his past including when he won two MVP Awards back in Texas. Not to be deterred, Pudge refocused himself and came back aiming to return to his previous levels of excellence. Pudge told the Detroit Free Press that he has moved on from last year:

"You put things behind you and get better as a person," an upbeat Rodriguez said after the game. "Last year's over. Done. It was tough, playing like that. I went through a lot in my personal life. Now, everything's OK."

Tigers manager Jim Leyland knew that a little encouragement could go a long with a veteran like Rodriguez, "When you see him do it [go through a patient at-bat], you remind him that it's good," Leyland said.

So far, the returns have been excellent with Pudge hitting .438, including a 5-for-5 offering against the Royals on Wednesday. His five runs batted in already equal 10% of his entire output a season ago. Initially, the patience appears to have returned too with Pudge drawing two walks to counter his two strikeouts.

Joining Shelton and Rodriguez are Placido Polanco (batting .389), Brandon Inge (.353, 2 HRs), and fourth outfielder Marcus Thames, who has made the most of his early season opportunities. In nine at-bats, Thames has five hits (.556) and two home runs.

On the other side, the starting rotation has been masterful combining for 23 and 1/3 innings and yielding a 2.31 earned run average and allowing less than one runner on per inning (0.99 WHIP). Critics immediately pointed to the anemic Kansas City Royals lineup as the reason, but Nate Robertson and Mike Maroth have faced the Texas Rangers' star-laden lineup the last two evenings and been just as good. The bullpen has been solid in 12 and 2/3 innings of work with Jordan Tata being the lone blemish yielding three runs in three innings in Thursday's 10-6 victory in Texas. Overall, the pen has tallied a 4.27 earned run average with a 1.11 WHIP and a 2.75 K:BB ratio (11 strikeouts against four walks).

It has been a great opening week for an upstart ballclub that can only benefit from building confidence early. For the third straight season, the Tigers have been a chic pick for success, but this year they could deliver and top the .500 mark for the first time since 1993. One of the main factors linked to the likeliness of a .500 season for the Tigers toes the rubber tonight against Kevin Millwood when fifth-starter Justin Verlander makes his 2006 debut.

Felix Finishes Five.

Felix Hernandez

But that's all! Felix Hernandez labored through five innings, throwing exactly 100 pitches, but allowing just one run. He allowed two hits with the one run, walked four and struck out four. He went to a three ball count nine times, but all told he wasn't on tonight and still managed to keep it very close. He can celebrate his 20th birthday tomorrow knowing that he's going to be an awesome pitcher for years to come.

Shelton in the Zone.

Chris Shelton hit his 5th home run tonight off of Texas Rangers pitcher John Koronka. Shelton is hitting .733 with six runs batted in.

King Felix’s 2006 Debut

Seattle Mariners' phenom starter Felix Hernandez makes his 2006 debut tonight against Joe Blanton and the Oakland A's .  Expectations are very high for Hernandez, including some looking for Dwight Gooden-like success despite the fact that he turns 20 tomorrow.  Gooden was simply unbelieveable at an equally young age.  I like Hernandez and think he'll be great, but not quite as great as some predict for 2006.  For tonight's debut, I'm thinking:

6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K

We'll see soon enough.

Walk the Lineup.

Daniel Cabrera walked six in the first inning against the Red Sox. Not to toot my own horn, but I did mention this on Sportsblurb.com three weeks ago in my player predictions for the 2006 season:

Daniel Cabrera continues to improve, but fails to have the breakout predicted as he once again walks over 80 batters

He finally got out of it after giving up four runs.

MiLB.tv

Kastava and I were on the phone today and we were talking about how baseball obsessed we were and I said, how sweet would a MiLB.tv be? So, I figured I should check because MLB is the leader in streaming sports (as I read in WSJ a few weeks back). At any rate, they do in fact have it and it’s $20.00 for about 500 games.

MiLB.tv

I’m going to check out the preview tonight and April is free, so plenty of time to watch and decide.
